From the Editor

What kind of a country puts its productive people in jail for trying to selling what they have produced? Western Canadian farmers have no right to market what they themselves grow, while farmers in Central Canada can. What kind of country institutionalizes this kind of double standard?

What kind of a country fails to protect its citizens from invasion? Even the mainstream authorities are now admitting what ordinary citizens have been claiming for decades, that our immigration policies are jeopardizing the health and welfare of Canadians. Recently the ravages of tuberculosis from other countries around the world from which Canada allows immigration, has become an issue, and those who've struggled to eradicate TB in Canada find their efforts undermined. What kind of a country views anyone who criticizes this process as a racist and ignores the substance of their criticism?

What kind of country expects its politicians to busy themselves with personal power struggles rather than the interests of the country? The process of choosing a prime minister and governing party has always been closed to certain sectors of the country, and fought out between Central Canadians, with those from the rest of Canada having only a salutory part, to give the illusion of a fairly-conducted system. What kind of country disenfranchises its citizens, based on where they live?

What kind of country tries to make a big show on the international scene, but fails to consider the damaging implications on its productive sector at home? The Kyoto Accord is receiving more than widespread criticism and almost universal condemnation from those who actually study the implications of it, who look at it objectively and without a political stake in it. What kind of country would unilaterally force ratification of such a policy, ignoring the pleas, anger and explosive frustration of whole areas of the populace?

What kind of country collects taxes, in ever-increasing forms and amounts, to pay for frivolous things like enforced bilingualism? The average person across Canada is being squeezed as never before to pay for the artificial edifices that make up "Canada," and which supposedly provide us with our identity. What kind of a country would expect that this could continue indefinitely?

What kind of country vests its power in one region of the country, treating the rest of the regions like vassal states? From the beginning of Confederation there has been no elected regional representation with power to make a difference in Canada. What kind of country could continue to take monies from the West, while refusing to grant it an equal voice in how those monies are spent?

What kind of a country is Canada? It is a country that is not really a country, and must be held together by counterfeit means. A country that has no unifying principle, but pretends that it has, to extort money from one region to pay for this illusion. Canada has shuffled along, as an unwieldy conglomerate with no common aim for so long that people think it is a country. But one of these days, it will only take one straw to finally break that conglomerate of opposing interests. Kyoto could be it.

Meanwhile, we have the Premier of Alberta seeming to evolve into a different type of being, compared to other, previous Premiers.

The subtle difference is that Klein is acting like the head of a state, much more convincingly than Chretien these days. Klein gives the impresssion that he actually cares about his constituency, the citizens of Alberta, for example by going to the farmers' demonstration in Lethbridge. Chretian, in contrast, acts more like a spoiled monarch than a responsive, responsible leader, willing to out on a limb for the benefit of his people. Klein's not perfect by any means, but if he can grow accustomed to acting like he's the head of state of a <M>country, Albertans and other Western Canadians might begin to understand in the heart of their beings that it is truly possible for us to survive as an independent country, that we really are big enough people to do just that.

Freedom's Voice

"Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner."

James Bovard

"There are four characteristics which brand a country unmistakably as a dictatorship: one-party rule- executions without trial or with a mock trial, for political offences- the nationalization or expropriation of private property- and censorship. A country guilty of these outrages forfeits any moral prerogatives, any claim to national rights or sovereignty, and becomes an outlaw."

Ayn Rand

A Separatist Speaks

By Doug Christie

The Kyoto Discord

As the left wing fanatics of the environmental movement try to drag Canada back to the stone age, Alberta leads the resistance and finds itself isolated. This realization is driving separatist sentiment again. Our job is to translate the sentiment into reality and opt out of the most corrupt political institution north of the Panama Canal, the federal system of Canada. In this time, our message is the fundamental truth about human nature, people are happiest and most productive when they govern themselves.

The elite of Central Canada who appoint every judge, decide every expenditure, control every means of media communication, distribute every bribe and administer every punishment have managed since 1867 to control it all from Ontario with a little Quebec help. But Alberta has been a growing threat due to its combination of individualistic and free enterprise politics and the Klein stand on government spending. Both are at odds with Canada's inherently socialistic and control-oriented centralized power structure.

Nothing is more symptomatic of the struggle than the whole process of the Kyoto Accord.

Born in some obscure socialist conference in a remote Japanese city where a few bureaucrats and social planners met in serene detachment from reality, its birth was almost completely unnoticed by most Albertans in the real world. What need have they to concern themselves with international agreements, they thought. The international socialists on the other hand have a long-range plan. They know what they could not sell to the voting public they can impose by secret or semi-secret international conventions.

By means of international treaties and conventions much national sovereignty has been surrendered in the past while the people slept. Erosion of free speech through United Nations Declarations on Human Rights, of parental rights through Declarations on the Rights of the Child, destruction of national immigration controls by a Convention on Refugees, and International agreements on foreign aid, free trade, or sanctions on certain nations have all been accomplished without informed public discussion, although the impact on people's lives have been, and will continue to be, immense. For once, Kyoto has brought home the significance of these clandestined and pampered bureaucrats and their remote decisions.

The fear even among Alberta's political establishment is obvious. They in the usual Canadian way have decided the safe route is to impose a bigger set of handcuffs on themselves. They have decided to propose through Premier Klein and presumably with the approval of ex-premier Lougheed to cap greenhouse gas emissions at 30% below current levels by 2020, rather than 6% below 1990 by 2012. What is the practical difference between censorship and self-censorship?

But the Kleins and Lougheeds are experts at betraying their constituencies while pretending to lead them. They always finish up at the end of the game in personal power while the people are still imprisoned in a political system that robs them of their wealth and freedom -- namely Canada. So what can the people do? Start thinking.

Kyoto is only one example but it is enough. The United States, China, Russia and Indonesia will not ratify it. They pollute the atmosphere with industrial emissions far greater than Canada. The science has not conclusively demonstrated any direct correlation between man-made carbon dioxide and global warming or climate change. So why do we turn off our life-style?

It is, as Ayn Rand, so aptly described it, the anti-industrial revolution.

But this is only the latest symptom. Independence, self-government for the West and the movement we represent is really the only answer. Our petitions which have been coming in spontaneously off our website are really what is necessary to achieve a peaceful solution which returns power where it belongs, to the people who pay taxes here. We empower people with a vision of what life in Western Canada could, and should be. We could create a really significant debate in which the experts would have to come before the people and justify their views. Then we would give the people the last word, in a referendum.

What could be a better way to bring all significant debate out into the open? What better way to make the business of living on ongoing education? What better way to keep the secret and powerful elite from making backroom deals for their own advantage and our disadvantage? What better way to make it necessary for everybody to be involved in the process of thinking, learning, speaking and reasoning on all the ethical, moral, social and practical matters of our time?

But to get from the slave state we are in where the elites on Ontario and their surrogates in the West decide, to the free state where Western Canadians rule themselves and really participate in government, we must pass the first and most important referendum on Independence.

Our petition is the first step on that road. What are you doing to help?

Immigration Policy Creates Health Problems

On November 21st an article appeared in the Times Colonist newspaper of Victoria BC with the headline "Immigration blamed for high TB rates." How amazing! Some of Canada's problems are finally being revealed. The article states "there were nearly 400 active tuberculosis cases in B.C. last year, representing a 35 percent increase, and the first time in at least a decade that such a marked jump has been recorded." In 1993 the World Health Organization labeled TB a "global emergency." A certain doctor Kevin Elwood, provincial director of TB control for the BC Center for Disease Control has stated "immigrants with active tuberculosis are refused entry to Canada. But those with inactive tuberculosis are not." Elwood said most of the immigrants who come to BC arrive from countries where TB is rampant -- India, China, the Philippines, and Vietnam. "For whatever reasons, we are pre-selecting people that come from high prevalence countries. That is countries where 30 percent of the population is infected." Although there is an antibiotic treatment to permanently eradicate the disease, the majority of newcomers, about two-thirds of them, refused to take the nine-month course of drugs necessary to do so. Dr. Elwood said "a significant number of people do refuse treatment and there is no way we can force them. The Chinese immigrants are particularly not interested in preventable drugs because they believe that as long as I feel well, they aren't going to take drugs with potential side effects."

It's amazing to me that the foregoing story was even published in our politically correct newspaper, because it appears to cast a dim light on immigrants from certain countries. However it remains obvious with tuberculosis increasing by 35 percent, at nearly twice the rate of across Canada, that British Columbia's immigration is a serious problem. It is equally obvious that Ottawa will never change its immigration policy simply because immigrants always vote for Liberal candidates. The Liberal government knows that it has been largely elected by immigrants.

Only when Western Canada and particularly BC can control its own immigration policy, will it be possible for people living here to protect themselves against some of the difficulties that immigration creates. One of those difficulties -- carbon dioxide emissions which allegedly creates holes in the ozone layer -- remarkably the environmentalists do not protest! Could it be that they do have a political agenda and like the Liberal party are really struggling for control of our lives and not for the good of our country or environment? Just asking.

Retrospective

On Wednesday the 20th of November, 2002, I looked into the sky at night and saw a full moon. I thought of that night 22 years ago on November the 20th, 1980, when there was also a full moon.

On that night at the Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton I spoke to over 2800 people who cheered "Free the West!" At that time the Trudeau government had imposed a National Energy Policy and it was obvious that Alberta was not going to take it anymore.

Now 22 years later another National Energy Policy is being foisted upon the people of Alberta by an international treaty they never even heard of until it was imposed upon them by the government in Ottawa. Once again the same old traitorous Albertans are telling people not to separate. They are the richly affluent, the powerful and the prestigious.

Once again I seem like a lone voice in the wilderness saying, "Separate! Build a new nation! My duty requires that I be truthful. And that I've tried to be. Will my fellow citizens of Western Canada listen? I look up at that moon and I wonder. In this time I wonder how many people hear my words. Will I have to wait another 22 years to see some significant changes? A man has a finite number of days. With these words and this web-site I hope to reach out to kindred spirits around the world and share the dream of a new nation of western Canada. Are you listening? Will you join us and make this dream a reality?
