It seems to be a particularly Western Canadian trait to emulate David, of David and Goliath fame. We can see this in a proliferation of little political parties that "take on" the major, corporate-funded or union-funded establishment parties....and sometimes succeed, as witness the history of Western Canada.
We can see this "David" phenomenon in individuals like Doug Christie when he appears in the Supreme Court of Canada, alone on one side standing up for unpopular principles and people like the free speech of Jim Keegstra (and everyone else), against the (once again heavily-funded and establishment) lawyers for the state, federal and provincial, and powerful special interest groups.
Another example of David in the world of heavily-funded, establishment publishing is that of Alberta/Western/B.C. Report, taking on such giants as Macleans, and with a well-aimed slingshot from the right, succeeding in keeping the giants off balance for years. Of course, the giants never admit that the Davids of the west are anything but an annoyance.
I wonder what theyll say about the latest Western David, Clive Beddoes WestJet?
Our five-year-old told his Nana on the phone the day of the inaugural flights of this upstart airlines that she could come and visit us "four times for what it cost her before." Hes not wrong, either, and that could be one of the greatest unifying factors of this new development in Western Canadian life.
Our great distances have been used to keep us isolated from each other, just as the cost of postage stamps has been used to prevent us from communicating as effectively as we could have. Now couriers and electronic mail and equipment have gone a long way to changing that, and cheap airline tickets, even purchased at the last minute, will do a lot to unify the West.
For these are Western Canadian flights; they dont go further east than Winnipeg. Whether thats of necessity or of plan, it doesnt matter because that will make this airline more Western. The rednecks have already taken it to their hearts! WestJet is more than just part of the national airline, and more than a "regional" airline. Its a Western Canadian airline, built of Western Canadian gall and guts.
There will be quite a battle, if WestJet lasts even a short time. Already travel agents are getting on-side with the major conventional airlines and saying that the other companies will match WestJets prices. Now they tell us, only after David has once more challenged them.

The following eloquent letter was recently received by e-mail to the WCC.
Hello WCC:
I recently sent in my membership form and payment, and thought I would write you a letter.
Let me tell you a little about myself. I am a 4th generation Albertan, born and raised in Edmonton, with roots in Peace River, AB. I have worked in the Alberta Oilfields for 8 years, since age 17. I have followed in the footsteps of my father, who began working in the Oilpatch since 1967.
I had attended St. Johns School of Alberta between 1983 and 1986, prior to launching my career in the oil & gas industry. I have always considered myself an Albertan, and never really was used to the word "Canadian" being attached to myself. When I traveled abroad, I found myself replying to people asking me where I was from with the reply, "Western Canada".
About 18 months ago, I noticed a meeting advertisement listed in the Alberta Report (which I read religiously). Having been close to the Alberta Oil Industry since a young age, I could remember my father mentioning the WCC, and voting for you in the election.
With these memories in mind, I began thinking about what it is to be an Albertan, and how different we are from the rest of the country. I began to look at things in a whole different light, about my trips out east and how foreign it felt to me, how different the attitudes among the 2 regions of the country.
I also remember only too vividly, the socialist (a.k.a. communist) reign of Pierre Trudeau, forced bilingualism and the metric system, unsustainable social programs, multiculturalism, increased government centralization and tragically, the National Energy Program. I watched in amazement that by 7 P.M. during the last federal election, that the Liberal Party had won the election without a single vote being counted in the West. I watched the aftermath of the last election showing this "country" to be 3 separate entities, the West, the East and Quebec.
I began to wake up to the horrors of big government and gun control. I saw the nightly brainwashing by the CBC, telling us how we were the "greatest" country in the world. I went to that meeting. I listened to Doug Christie and began to understand the problems of Western Canada were due to the stranglehold of the East.
He told me nothing I didnt already know, he just put things clear in my mind. And taking the words that were said at that meeting, I began to be aware of the burdening debt of this country. I began to research and read about these problems, in an unbiased fashion.
My findings were simple facts: Western Canada has the only 2 "have" provinces, that is, we send Ottawa billions more than we receive, which in turn is sent mostly to Quebec and the other eastern provinces. We are forced to abide by laws that are unnecessary and unwanted in the west. We have been taxed into slavery, our master being the Canadian Government.
I saw that our freedoms were slowly being eroded for the "good of the country". I saw that "Peace, Order and Good Government" was a blank check for the politicians to rule over us as they pleased.
The second meeting I attended was prior to the Quebec referendum. Although not a typical meeting, as there was most of the news media in Alberta in attendance, "Pro-Canadian" protesters were at the meeting to confront the WCC members. Although lively, I was slightly shocked to see myself full-screen on every news station for the 10:00 news.
The next day, I had many calls from people that had seen me on television. I found myself expounding the WCC stand on western separation, and at that point realized that I am a Western Canadian and a Western Separatist. Although I am young and eager to make a change, I have questions that I want to ask you. How large are our numbers? Have you seen a trend towards the cause? What is our strategy?
Although my work takes up a great deal of my time and energy, I would like to help you in any way I can. I cant see this country lasting much longer in its present form. Once Quebec secedes, were next. But what is our game plan? What can I do to get involved in the process?
I am 25 years of age. I have a long future ahead of me. A future that is very bleak in Canada, but very bright in a Western Canada. Please let me know what I can do to help. I know that Western Canada could be a truly free and prosperous country, If only we can open peoples eyes.
Thank You for your time,
Sean Freeland, Edmonton
To the Editor:
As an avid reader of WSP for many years, may I give a view from someone who has lived in the West, Ontario, and now Quebec. Also comments on Ted Krauses lucid letter appearing in your January edition.
Independence is certainly possible but Western Canada must have a Peoples Bank, a National Bank and Credit Union to free itself from financial parasites like those in central Canada, i.e. big banks and others of that ilk.

To the Editor:
Thanks for your effort to educate people. We are terribly bamboozled. The last 25 years have been fairyland. The paper shufflers are all rich.
Our Canadian economy is a disaster. The rest of the world is in the same boat. The monetary set-up (credit, interest & taxes) steals everything. One old writer refers to it as corporate communism.

The power of vision is incredible! Research indicates that children with "future-focused role images" perform far better scholastically and are significantly more competent in handling the challenges of life. Teams and organizations with a strong sense of mission significantly outperform those without the strength of vision. According to Dutch sociologist Fred Polak, a primary factor influencing the success of civilizations is the "collective vision" people have of their future.
Vision is the best manifestation of creative imagination and the primary motivation of human action. Its the ability to see beyond our present reality, to create, to invent what does not yet exist, to become what we not yet are. It gives us capacity to live out of our imagination instead of our memory.
..And consider the images the media project cynicism, skepticism, violence, indulgence, fatalism, materialism. "Important news" is bad news. ...
When we talk about "the passion of vision" were talking about a deep, sustained energy that comes from a comprehensive, principle-based, need-based, endowment-based seeing that goes beyond chronos and even kairos. It deals with an aeon concept of time, from the Greek aion, meaning an age, a lifetime or more. It taps into the deep core of who we are and what we are about. Its fueled by the realizations of the unique contribution we have the capacity to make the legacy we can leave. It clarifies purpose, gives direction, and empowers us to perform beyond our resources.
We call it "passion" because this vision can become a motivating force so powerful it, in effect, becomes the DNA of our lives. Its so ingrained and integrated into every aspect of our being that it becomes the compelling impetus behind every decision we make. Its the fire within the explosion of inner synergy that happens when critical mass is reached in integration of the four fundamental needs. Its the energy that makes life an adventure the deep burning "yes!" that empowers us to say "no" peacefully and confidently to the less important things in our lives.
This passion can empower us to literally transcend fear, doubt, discouragement, and many other things that keep us from accomplishment and contribution.

(From an article by the Canadian Press, Toronto, published in the Times-Colonist, February 29, 1996)
A top Bay Street brokerage says Canada will be better off financially if Quebec opts for divorce.
CIBC Wood Gundy says Quebec separation is nothing for investors to fear.
"There is a compelling argument that a constitutional divorce would leave the rest of Canada on more favorable fiscal terrain than it is today," the firm said in a recent analysis.
The report says separation would be a jolt at first but "if political processes work to ensure such shocks are transitory, Canada could emerge from divorce as a stronger credit [risk]."
The report says Quebec has been a "major beneficiary from fiscal federalism."
It cited 1993 figures that show Quebec got $2.2 billion more than it paid in taxes, while the provinces share of interest payments on the federal debt was another $8.7 billion.
Combined, that accounted for 33 per cent of the entire federal deficit.
The article concludes with the critics of the report having their say, and Quebec Finance Minister Bernard Landry saying that it backs the Parti Quebecoiss long-standing belief that separation would be good for both sides.
"It just confirms something we have said a thousand times that Canada would be better off to have a new deal with a sovereign Quebec."
The following article from the Canadian Press appeared on February 20, 1996:
Some provinces such as Nova Scotia are overstating cuts in federal transfer payments by keeping quiet about a big boost in equalization payments, says a political analyst.
"If you really take a look at the federal cutback figures, its a cut of $51 million [in Nova Scotia], and not the $100 million which the provincial minister of finance is weeping and wailing about," says Agar Adamson, a political science professor at Acadia University.
Ottawa is cutting the amount of money it hands over to the provinces for health care, higher education and social services known as the CHST by almost $3 billion in the next fiscal year.
But the federal Finance Department says the sever poorer provinces will receive almost $380 million more in another area of transfer funding equalization payments.
Equalization payments are designed to help the poorer provinces offer public services comparable to the richer ones, and are given to every province except Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.
Earlier this month, Nova Scotia Finance Minister Bernie Boudreau claimed before a Halifax business audience that Ottawa was cutting roughly $100 million, but neglected to note that an extra $46 million is expected in equalization payments.
And last fall, the Newfoundland government warned that Ottawa was cutting $110 million in transfer funding, then revised the figure last weekend to just $28 million.
Still, the federal Finance Department says the cut will be just $10 million when equalization payments are included.
"The have-not provinces are not suffering nearly as badly as, say, are Ontario, Alberta or B.C."
Ontario, for example, will see its transfers cut by more than $1 billion.
The pattern may continue in the 1996-97 fiscal year.
Although final numbers for each province have not been worked out, CHST funding will face a further overall cut of $1.8 billion, while the seven poorer provinces are projected to get another equalization boost of $380 million, federal Finance Department figures show.

On Thursday, March 7, 1996 at 10:00 a.m. I had the pleasure of being on WestJets first flight out of Victoria, bound for Edmonton. I was going to fight the tax department in a case the next morning in Red Deer.
The excitement about this new airlines was everywhere in the airport. Balloons and a large birthday cake decorated the departure lounge and the owner of the airline, Mr. Clive Beddoe was there to thank the people for their support. Those I spoke with in this lounge really cared about the success of this airline. It was "our" airline and they felt like it.
The speech by Mr. Beddoe was really full of enthusiasm for people. It was infectious and everyone was happy. This was the happy airline. The jet departed late, but no one seemed to care. As we got on, it was clear there would only be 40 people in a beautiful brand new interior. It was clean and spacious, unlike what I expected. It was staffed by friendly people who did not rattle on at me in French. What a delight.
I saw the owner get on and talk to some people on board. What an amazing thing to see an owner of an airline thank people for support and really mean it.
I asked if I could speak with him, and he sat with me for awhile. He didnt know me but was courteous and frank. I said Id like to help the airline, as it is a Western Canadian enterprise and could he tell me something about it and himself. How would he risk going into such a venture?
The answers were interesting. There are three aircraft, not new, but fully refurbished. He said they have to be kept far above minimum safety standards because they dont have replacement aircraft and hence have to be fully operational after each day with all back up systems functioning. Safety is a vital concern.
I asked what he had done previously. He said he was in real estate in the 70s, left that in the 80s for warehousing, recycling and the plastics business. He also runs private vocational training schools for adults in Calgary and Edmonton. His Career Colleges in these two cities have about 1200 students. He is 49 years old and has a young family, living in Calgary. He is English by origin.
It took two years of work to get approvals for this new Western Canadian airline and you can imagine this wouldnt be easy. The aircraft are debt-free and if their initial attitude is an indication, this airlines is going places.
I felt like cheering as I flew both to and from Edmonton on this airline. As a person who makes usually about 3 trips a month, I cant say Ive ever felt this way before on an airline, but one question troubled me: would it succeed?
I asked Mr. Beddoe about Greyhounds new proposed airline doing the same thing as hes attempting to do, no tickets just a boarding pass, etc. He said that Greyhound, a multi-billion dollar American corporation was simply using a licensing arrangement with Kelowna Flight Craft to get around the rules about foreign ownership of an airline. They will be the major competition against a fully Western Canadian-owned airline, WestJet.
I would like to suggest two steps by us in our own interest and for this new airline. First of all, lets use it. The fare between Edmonton and Calgary, 14 days in advance is $29! This ranges to a no advance high of $69, one way. Edmonton to Victoria is between $159 (no advance booking) to $69 (14 days in advance). All fares are one way so you can book a return further in advance than a departure.
Secondly, I think we should write the Minister of Transport and ask how Greyhound can be allowed to get around the rules by its deal with Kelowna Flight Craft and as a foreign-owned airline, compete in Canada against WestJet.
Although Air Canada and Canadian are now offering comparable fares on a few seats (not the whole aircraft) they wouldnt be doing this much if WestJet hadnt come on the scene. It is right to encourage and use Western Canadian industries so we can become a fully effective nation someday. WestJet is doing what needs to be done to show the world we can do everything for ourselves. Clive Beddoe is a really good example of what one person can do.
The WestJet reservation number is 1-800-JET-5696. Lets support an airline that is doing what should be done in Western Canada.
In Canada, truth can make you a criminal.
Since February 28, 1996, the day that the Supreme Court of Canada said, in the Keegstra case, that the possibility that a person might be telling the truth is not sufficiently important to prevent you being a criminal if that truth promotes hate, I have become rededicated to western Canadian independence.
This country is founded on premises which do not conform to the nature of man or of God. In brief, Canada has become perverted. Truth has never been well-received in history, in this world. The realization has been experienced by Galileo, Socrates, Jesus Christ or John Scopes, who all experienced the truth of this statement. There is a hostility which has only been overcome by perseverance through persecution and martyrdom. Still it is our essential mission to know the truth and the truth shall set us free.
I have realized that Canada is founded upon a series of carefully protected agreed upon lies. Such a nation cannot last and does not deserve to last.
The lies are really layer upon layer of excuses for Canadas existence and its obvious failures along with patchwork attempts to plaster over the fault lines before its collapse becomes obvious to everyone.
The nation was founded upon such various lies as the fear of annexation to the U.S. and the railroad, but it is presently supported by four major lies which are officially enforced. These are only a few of the officially sanctioned lies which our government and its media servants have agreed will be promoted and maintained. They have a large bodyguard of peripheral lies too numerous to list here.
The first major current lie is multiculturalism. There are no stable multicultural states in the world, but those who promoted this concept tell us it should be illegal to question this premise because to do so would be to express racism and offend the hate law. They bolster a failure with their terror of prosecution for disbelief. They pretend that multiculturalism is designed to help mold harmony (which it has not) and to help the third world (which it does not). Really it is a reservoir of cheap labour and docile slaves for the tax machine so the politicians can stay at the trough a little longer.
Another big lie is bilingualism, that we should, by government coercion, learn two languages, and that our government must function in two languages. The real reason was to allow a deceptive screen for the patronage which the Quebec politicians were going to use to bribe their Quebec supporters with all the best jobs in the country coast to coast and prevent the Anglos from having any way to object without being called "racist" and threatened once more with the hate laws.
Another presently agreed-upon lie is the lie of the "terror on the Right". This is the excuse for CSIS spying on the Heritage Front while one of its operatives known as Grant Bristow helped create the organization he was paid to spy upon and then organize violent or apparently suspicious acts to justify the spying, like offering lists of the names and address of Jewish individuals to create the illusion of terror on the right. All the while, the government tolerated (if not funded) "anti-racists" are sending bombs and burning peoples houses, trashing them in front of the police with impunity. All of this is justified by the fear of the "racists" and hence anything done by the government is deemed justified because whites, Anglos, who want to protect their culture (particularly males) are evil and not to be trusted. This never seems to apply however, to Quebec separatists.
This agreed-upon lie and its sinister implication is based on fear of fascism and screened from public view by SIRC (Security Intelligence Review Committee) a little group of "watch dogs" (actually lap dogs) politically appointed hacks whose job is to serve their political masters.
The fourth major modern lie is the myth that Canada was not founded as a Christian or European country but was actually founded by multicultural effort. This lie tries desperately to search for ethnic origins other than European to explain the process of settlement and colonization or development and usually rests on "the Chinese who built the railroad." No doubt Chinese laborers were working on the railroad for money generated by English venture capital owned, organized, planned and paid for by Anglo-Saxons. At the same time they were not building railroads in China for lack of those skills and abilities. But anyone who points to this truth in these current circumstances will also be branded as racist and fearful of being prosecuted as such. This major lie is an attempt to create and maintain an official history which says Canada was always a multicultural nation when it was not.
These four disconnected areas of Canadas foundation of lies are really symptoms of a system that has no moral fiber. It only exists for the reasons of patronage and to protect previous lies.
The Canadian government like any liar and bully has to keep lying and scare its critics. In such a "free and democratic society" it is quite natural that the possibility of truth should be no justification for promoting hatred. It is natural because hatred will always be generated among honest people by a nation that lies about its practices and covers its tracks with charges of racism. My consolation is the knowledge that truth will always out in the end and nations which found their existence on lies will collapse under the weight of their own corruption. Their usual reaction to truth is to criminalize it. The tragedy is that more martyrs will pay a price for liberty on the road to truth. It was ever thus.
In Western Canada we can and should create a constitution which gives us the freedom of Americans and trusts us to know how to use that freedom to preserve it by its use for the good of future generations. That possibility does not exist in Canada any longer if it ever did. The pressure is on Westerners who love freedom to put up or shut up.
The first intellectual prize fight in Victoria went well in spite of the fact we were not allowed to advertise its existence. (Hows that for censorship?) About 60 local people in Victoria assembled in a downtown hotel to hear Doug Christie defeat a local businessman who maintained that Canada was a great country and worth saving.
The issues of economics dominated the first 10 minute round. The second round of ten minutes was fought on the emotional issues of culture, identity, the flag and patriotism as the businessman tried to avoid the hard-hitting blows on economics. The last five minutes for both sides saw a series of fast blows for Western separatism piled up on the basis of the future in Canada or as an independent nation. Clearly the audience voted overwhelmingly in support of the proposition that "B.C. would be better off in an independent nation of Western Canada."
New prize fights are planned for Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton in the spring.
B.C. is poised to give away vast tracts of land and special rights to govern and fish based on race. This is a reality which one would never have believed possible stated in these simple terms, but it is true for what are so called "aboriginals."
The Nisgaa settlement, the first of a series to come gives exclusive ownership of thousands of square miles, control of a larger area and the rights to take fish and game under their terms with cash payments in the hundreds of millions to about 3,500 people whose only claim is based upon their race. The whole idea seems absurd but the cynical NDP must believe this will give them a young block vote forever. They are buying political power with public money, a trick the Liberals in Ottawa have used for years.
Naturally the whole Nisgaa tribe assembled as a remote area to consider and vote on the package before it was finally approved. Do you think the whole white community, who will pay for it can vote on this? Not a chance. And it would be labelled racism to suggest that they should. No referendum for them, since they might turn this giveaway down. It will no doubt be called racist to refer to the rest of us as white.
Due to Canadas immigration policy we are now decidedly not a "white community". Perhaps this is why the government keeps immigration at such high levels. The populace is stupidly naive when new immigrants see government action, they usually simply applaud. Things were worse where they cam from.
Please note one important thing: The exchange is government to government. No individual "native" gets anything. The tribe gets it all. The large tribal homeland, or collective farm will administer all the funds, make all distribution and own land collectively. No wonder the NDP wants to ram this through before an election. This is the largest single giveaway and bribe in the history of Canada and nobody is heard speaking out against it.
The Canadian elite have created a conspiracy of silence. We must repudiate these agreements. A nation of Western Canada will not be a successor government to that of Canada. Equality of rights will mean that no person has any special rights because of race or there must be special places and rights for non-natives who created the wheel, the internal combustion engine, modern medicine, social programs and education, the printed word, none of which preceded the "white man". Compensation for such as these should more than offset any native land claims. Not to mention the hundreds of millions annually for welfare, housing, education, etc. we now pay and will continue to pay. We are witnessing the destruction of English Canada by a planned, systematic burying of our rights, our wealth and our culture. Separation is the escape from Canadas genocide of Europeans.
North American Indigenous Games organizer Alex Nelson says the fact that the federal and provincial governments are slow to give him $1.5 million for these games is not racism, but he suggests his demand is being treated differently. If a group asked for $1.5 million for white European games it wouldnt be the government being called racist, would it?
Peter Lougheed, that fountain of national unity, at a Business Council of Canada meeting on Saturday March 9th, said "Quebec cant accept less than Meech being enshrined in the Constitution." It seems when you dont like the answers the people give in a referendum, you tell them to answer it again. Soon we will offer Quebec sovereignty association. Soon we will offer to pay for their sovereignty if only they will keep our name.
Paul Martin was defending his budget against the jeers of Quebec separatists who said he was cutting transfer payments to Quebec. The ever-arrogant Martin had just the barb to prick their balloon. He bragged that under his budget Quebec, with 25% of the population still gets 31% of all federal transfer payments. Dont tell that truth out west, Paul or we Western separatists might get the message through to the people. I guess the media dont usually allow such realities to embarrass the government because the story was buried on page 33 of the <M>Edmonton Sun on March 8, 1996.
We need people who are willing to be candidates. It will cost some money to each of us, but we need people now willing to come to a meeting and discuss how to get on the ballot, campaign and be a good representative for our movement. Give it a thought and give Doug Christie a call at 604-385-1022
This is a four novel series including The Skystone, The Singing Sword, The Eagles Brood, and most recently, The Saxon Shore.
This series deals with the death of the Roman Empire in Britain. A group of Roman Legionaires who decide to keep order in their part of the world by developing a colony independent of Rome. They accomplish Romes Blessing in exchange for defending their part of the Empire.
The story is the origin of Camelot, and has many parallels to Western Canada because the collapse of Canada is like the collapse of Rome. Chaos is coming in both cases. 400 AD sounds like 1996 in Canada. Where in 396, the few remaining legions struggled to resist the invasion by Norsemen, Saxons, Picts and Scots, today the few remaining politicians struggle to resist the invasion of immigrants while servile, political opportunists say open the gates as long as they vote for me.
The most interesting part of these books involves the organization of the new colony which was to become Camelot in later years. They gradually decided to form a walled fortress or city as the country became too full of marauding bands after 400 years of peaceful Roman occupation. The essential elements of a new nation state were carved out of chaos by a group who had a plan.
These books inspire me to believe in the future of Western Canada where we could do now what they did for themselves then. The round table of Western Canada has many empty seats.
The first Canadian Free Speech conference was held on February 21, 1987, with Judge Les Bewley as keynote speaker.
A second conference devoted to the discussion of free speech issues in Canada and featuring various advocates of free speech, will be held in Vancouver on Saturday, March 23rd, 1996, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Surrey Inn, 9850 King George Highway, in the East Fraser Room.
Among the confirmed speakers are Pat Burns, Doug Christie, Doug Collins, Jud Cyllorn, Steve Dumas, Paul Fromm and Eileen Pressler.
Topics to be discussed include customs censorship, censorship in the media, Bill 33, thought crimes trials, censorship and politics, as well as a look at what can be done to secure freedom of expression in Canada.
The cost is $35.00 for the days events.
