January 28,1998

In a speech before an enthusiastic crowd in Victoria, Douglas Christie unveiled a new approach to give Western Canadians a voice in their day to day affairs as well as their political future through direct democracy, which Christie argues will eventually lead to separation.

Citing that Westerners can only vote once every five years and have no real voice in goverment, Christie spoke of a new system where debates would be held in coffee houses, town halls, homes then voters could vote directly, via telephone on any piece of legislation, thus circumventing international interests, large monopolies and special interest groups and thereby returning democratic power back to the people.

Christie cited facts supporting that a new western nation could stand on its own. Said Christie "...the west produces 52% of Canada's fishery, forestry, mining and agriculture revenue along with 90% of Canada's oil, gas and coal." Many of the questions concerned the anticipated separation of Quebec and how might direct democracy be implemented.

About Western Canada Concept

The Western Canada Concept Party was founded in 1980 born out of the long history of western alienation. It advocates a new system of direct democracy to return legislative, judicial and other powers back to the individual.

Membership is growing because of concerns about international treaties, government by decree, uncontrolled taxes, patronage and treatment of Quebec among other issues over which westerners have little or no voice.
