An open letter to Stephane Dion, Unity Minister

Press Release, Western Canada Concept Party

For immediate release: March 20, 1998

I read with amazement your comments in the Globe and Mail. With regard to your efforts on unity, please be aware that at least 25% of the people in Western Canada support western separation and probably, if the truth be told, over half are in favor of letting the people of Quebec choose a future that they control. We would like to remind you that before the separatist movement really got started, in Quebec, the amount favoring separation was also about 25%.

We are in contact with members of the Bloc and are beginning a campaign so that Westerners' true feelings will be heard on all matters concerning what is a worldwide trend, namely autonomy and greater democracy for regions that have been exploited to the advantage of a more populous region and the elite group of interests that continue to be the sole beneficiary of this crooked deal we call Canada.

Your recent remarks "I sometimes wonder whether the way to settle the constitutional problem might not be to insert in Section 2 of the Constitution: 'Canada has been unfair to everyone,' after which the case would be closed and we would enjoy together the benefits of our country." speaks volumes about Central Canada's arrogant treatment of all the people of Canada. It is condescending, dictatorial and continues to ignore as always fundamental principles of democracy. In fairness, how could we expect otherwise from a man whose political fate is dependent on the party leader signing his nomination papers which is but another way that the people of Canada are deprived of their fundamental democratic rights and freedoms.

Actions and statements such as yours, your party and the political system are breaking up Canada, not separatists. How can you pretend to act on behalf of a country where legislation, such as the GST that is unfavorable at times with 80% of the people remains the law of the land?

Western Separation, like freedom is not a notion. We plan to do everything in our power to support the people of Quebec to exercise their fundamental freedoms. We also plan to do everything in our power to exercise our fundamental freedoms. Freedom is not a political issue. It has a deep theological and sociological base and history has shown that regimes have been ultimately powerless to try to legislate, intimidate or vilify it away.

The Liberal government which you represent was not elected in Western Canada. You speak for Ontario and Ontario alone. You have no legislative right to speak for the West. We like Quebec would be grateful if you just stayed in Ottawa.

If Canada was so good for Quebec you would not have to go there to intimidate those who simply want to choose their own destiny. You are simply a propagandist for a worn out system which has nothing to offer but force and false promises.
