What the Federal Government does not want you to know.

The Quebec sovereignty question has been put on hold and the Feds will prevail in keeping Quebec in Canada. That is what the Federal Government wants you to believe.

The truth of the matter is that the separatists are hard at work. While most Canadians think that the PQ government are too busy focusing on the Quebec economy, the truth of the matter is that they are doing everything in their power to win the next referendum. This includes punishing English and ethnic people in Quebec that voted against the referendum. These people are finding that is harder for them to get government services and jobs and whenever the Quebec government does their cutbacks (remember, the Quebec economy), who do you think is taking the brunt? The migration out of Quebec continues and is being encouraged. The last referendum was lost by a mere handful of votes. The separatists are seeing to it that this cannot happen again.

What Ontario does not want you to know

A recent article by Ted Byfield in the November 6, 1996 edition of the Financial Post called "Ontario can't live without Quebec - the West can" gives some interesting insight into the cost to Ontario and implied benefits for the West should Quebec leave.

A study by the Ontario government on the real cost of Quebec separation is being suppressed because it speaks of almost catastrophic damage to the Ontario economy should Quebec leave Canada. This would include a mass exodus from Quebec to Ontario with little in the way of jobs to support them. The result would be an estimated 30% increase in the Ontario budget, more than 16 Billion dollars, for increased costs of welfare, policing and schooling.

Another likely cost would be a lowering of Ontario's credit rating because of its increased spending which in turn would lead to greater costs in dealing with its debt. It is worth quoting a statement in the article made by Byfield:

"Canada is an economic contrivance established 129 years ago for the material benefit of the two central provinces. These two first demolished the hitherto buoyant economy of the Atlantic provinces, rendering them totally dependent on federal subsidy, then established the West as a kind of hinterland colony which they have been exploiting ever since."

Well said Ted!
